The UK's first daily GLP-1 weight-loss tablet
Same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection — no needles
by Novo Nordisk
The Wegovy pill is the first once-daily GLP-1 tablet licensed for weight loss in the UK. It contains semaglutide — the same clinically proven active ingredient as the Wegovy injection — in a tablet you swallow, with no needles. At WeightGone UK it will be prescribed and monitored the same way as all our treatments: face-to-face by a GPhC-registered pharmacist in Timperley, with a review every month.

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily oral form of semaglutide, approved by the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on 11 June 2026 for weight loss and weight management. The UK is the first country in Europe to license it, following approvals in the US and UAE.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: it mimics a natural gut hormone that acts on appetite-regulating areas of the brain, increasing the feeling of fullness and reducing hunger and cravings. It's the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection — the difference is simply how it gets into your body: a daily tablet instead of a weekly injection.
Like all GLP-1 treatments, the tablet is licensed as an addition to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — it works best as part of a supported programme, which is exactly what our pharmacist-led service provides.
Under the MHRA-approved licence, the semaglutide tablet may be prescribed to adults who have:
This isn't a complete list — suitability is always confirmed at a face-to-face assessment with our pharmacist. See our full contraindications guide and suitability checker.
Because semaglutide is a peptide, the tablet only absorbs properly on an empty stomach. The routine matters — here's exactly how to take it:
Why the 30-minute rule? Eating or drinking too soon significantly reduces how much semaglutide your body absorbs — which means less effect. If the morning routine doesn't fit your lifestyle, the once-weekly Wegovy injection may suit you better. We'll talk this through at your consultation.
Like the injection, the tablet is titrated — started low and increased gradually so your body adjusts and side effects stay manageable. The MHRA-approved schedule requires a minimum of one month at each dose level:
| Daily dose | Duration | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 mg | Month 1 (minimum) | Starting dose — lets your body adjust |
| 4 mg | Month 2 (minimum) | First escalation step |
| 9 mg | Month 3 (minimum) | Second escalation step |
| 25 mg | Ongoing maintenance | Full treatment dose shown to deliver trial results |
The 1.5 mg, 4 mg and 9 mg doses are titration steps — 25 mg daily is the dose that produced the full weight-loss results in clinical trials. Each increase is confirmed at your monthly face-to-face pharmacist review, and can be slowed down if you need more time at a step.
Already on Wegovy injections and prefer to go needle-free? The licensed guidance makes the switch straightforward:
You can transition directly to the 25 mg daily tablet — no need to re-titrate from the bottom. Your pharmacist will time the switch around your last injection (typically starting the tablet when your next weekly dose would have been due) and review you face-to-face a month later.
There's no like-for-like tablet conversion at every step, so your pharmacist will map you onto the closest appropriate tablet dose and continue titrating from there — planned at a face-to-face review so the change is smooth and side effects stay controlled.
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a different medicine, so there's no direct dose equivalence. A pharmacist-planned change-over is essential — see our dedicated switching guide or book a review and we'll plan it with you.
Common reasons: needle anxiety, travel (tablets don't need a fridge like pens do), or simply preferring a daily routine. Effectiveness is broadly similar — it's about what you'll stick with long-term.
Never switch on your own. Timing matters when moving between a weekly and a daily medicine — done wrong, you risk a gap in treatment or doubled-up doses. All switches at WeightGone UK are planned and supervised face-to-face by our GPhC-registered pharmacist.
Approval was based on the OASIS 4 phase 3 trial — 307 adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, taking 25 mg daily alongside diet and exercise for 64 weeks:
~17%
average body-weight loss for people who stayed on treatment
~3%
average loss in the placebo group over the same period
64 wks
trial length — weight loss built steadily over time
Counting everyone randomised to the tablet (including those who stopped early), average weight loss was around 14% vs 2% for placebo. Individual results vary — your pharmacist will set realistic expectations and track your progress at every monthly review.

Side effects are the same family as other GLP-1 medicines and are most common when starting or increasing a dose. In OASIS 4 they were generally mild to moderate and settled with time; around 7% of participants stopped treatment because of them.
The step-by-step titration exists precisely to keep these manageable — and unlike online-only providers, you see our pharmacist face-to-face every month, so anything you experience is dealt with quickly. Suspected side effects of any medicine can also be reported via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.
Novo Nordisk expects the tablet to be available in the UK within weeks of the 11 June 2026 approval, initially on private prescription. It is not yet available on the NHS — that depends on a NICE evaluation that follows every new medicine.

Common questions about the oral semaglutide tablet at our Timperley pharmacy.
The Wegovy pill is a once-daily oral tablet containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection. It was approved by the MHRA on 11 June 2026 as the first daily GLP-1 tablet for weight loss in the UK, for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
Yes. The MHRA approved the semaglutide (Wegovy) tablet for weight loss and weight management on 11 June 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to license a daily GLP-1 weight-loss pill. It is expected to be available on private prescription within weeks of approval.
Take one tablet whole, once daily, on an empty stomach after an overnight fast, with only a sip of water. Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines — food or drink within 30 minutes reduces how much semaglutide is absorbed.
Treatment starts at 1.5 mg once daily and is increased step by step to 4 mg, then 9 mg, then the 25 mg maintenance dose, spending at least one month at each dose level. Your pharmacist confirms each increase at your monthly face-to-face review.
Yes. People established on the 2.4 mg weekly Wegovy injection can transition directly to the 25 mg daily tablet without re-titrating, according to the MHRA-approved guidance. If you're on a lower injection dose, your pharmacist will plan the right starting point for you at a face-to-face review.
In the 64-week OASIS 4 clinical trial, adults taking the 25 mg daily tablet alongside diet and exercise lost an average of around 17% of their body weight while on treatment, compared with about 3% with placebo. Individual results vary, and your pharmacist will set realistic expectations with you.
There is no direct head-to-head trial, but results look broadly similar: roughly 17% average weight loss with the 25 mg daily pill (OASIS 4) versus about 15–17% with the 2.4 mg weekly injection. The best choice usually comes down to whether you prefer a daily tablet with food-timing rules or a once-weekly injection.
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting — and are usually mild to moderate and settle over time. Gradual dose increases help limit them, and your monthly face-to-face review is there to manage anything you experience.
Not yet. Following MHRA approval it is expected on private prescription first, while NHS availability depends on a NICE evaluation. As a private pharmacy we can assess eligible patients face-to-face and supply once stock launches in the UK.
