Weight-loss injections aren't the answer for everybody
Medically reviewed by Muhammad Adnan, GPhC-registered Superintendent Pharmacist · Last updated June 2026
Weight-loss medication can be life-changing for the right person — but it isn't a magic bullet, and it isn't right for everyone. We'd rather have an honest conversation than put you on a treatment that won't help. Here's how we think about it.
A tool, not a quick fix
UK guidance (NICE) is clear that weight-loss medicines should never be used on their own — only alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity. Medication on its own rarely delivers lasting results; the people who do best pair it with real, sustainable lifestyle change.
It may be a good fit if…
- You have a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related health condition (a general private guide).
- You've struggled to lose weight through diet and activity alone.
- You're ready to make lasting changes to your eating and lifestyle alongside treatment.
- You can attend a face-to-face review at least once a month.
It may not be the answer if…
- You only want to lose a few pounds before a holiday or event.
- You're pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive.
- You aren't ready or able to change your diet and activity yet.
- You have certain medical histories (see our contraindications guide).
- You're under 18 — these treatments aren't licensed for general weight loss in children.
Alternatives we'll talk through
If medication isn't right for you — or you'd rather start elsewhere — we'll discuss the options honestly, including:
- Structured diet, activity and behaviour support
- Oral weight-loss medicine where appropriate
- NHS weight-management routes and when they may suit you better
- Referral to your GP where that's the safest step
Our promise
We will tell you honestly if treatment isn't right for you, and we won't pressure you into it. Every plan starts with a face-to-face assessment and includes a review at least once a month.
